Starting My Own Small Business Was a Bad Idea — Until It Wasn’t

By now, you probably know — I’ve started my own small business: Batua.
One of those decisions that felt half inspired, half impulsive. But looking back, it was exactly the leap I needed to take. And today, I want to talk about why I took that leap — and why sometimes, the most “unrealistic” choices are the ones that end up changing you.
How it all started?
For the longest time, I had this strong, unsettling urge to do something of my own. Not just work a job, not just go with the flow — but build something that reflected me.
I spoke about it endlessly. And the person who had to sit through every version of this conversation? My husband. Patient, practical, always listening.
Let’s just say… he wasn’t convinced at first. While I spoke of dreams and aesthetics and Pinterest boards, he brought me back to the ground. “The market is cluttered,” he’d say. “There’s already so much out there. What if it doesn’t work?” And he wasn’t wrong.
He’s the practical one. I’m the emotional one.
And that emotional voice inside me? It never backed down. And eventually — he didn’t either. He never dismissed me. He listened. Patiently. For weeks. And now? He’s the one keeping me going.

I may have started Batua on impulse, but I’m continuing it because of love — love for the craft, for the dream, and for the man who believes in both.
Why I Started Batua (And Why It Wasn’t Just About Bags)
Batua was born out of frustration — of not finding handbags that were equal parts trendy, aesthetic, and personal. But it was also born out of this feeling that I couldn’t keep ignoring the part of me that wanted more. Not more money or fame. Just more me in my life.
Batua wasn’t born out of a grand strategy or a 10-slide pitch deck. It came from a very simple desire: to create bags that feel personal, aesthetic, and expressive — for girls like us who love to explore, express, and stand out
And yes, it’s hard. But it’s mine.

Batua was more than just a product idea. It was a decision to reclaim a version of myself I had kept quiet for too long. The part of me that wanted to build something — not just follow instructions, meet deadlines, or be someone else’s dependable employee. I didn’t have all the answers (still don’t), but I realized that not knowing everything is not a reason to delay your dream.
The Reality of Building Something Small (and Beautiful)
Let me say this honestly: starting a small business is hard. There are days when I question everything — the strategy, the designs, the effort. There are days when I get zero new followers despite pouring hours into content. There are days when I make losses. Real ones. Emotional and financial.
Our first few followers picked the logo, and the banana shake picked the decisions. Honestly, it’s a co-founded business between me, my audience, and my blender 🍌😌
But then there are other days.

Days when someone messages to say, “I loved this bag. It’s so me.”
Days when a reel crosses 10K views and I smile like a kid.
Days when I ship my first order to a new city and realize someone I’ve never met chose to believe in my dream.
Those moments are magic. And they make it all worth it.
Why You Shouldn’t Wait for Perfect Conditions
I often hear women say, “But I don’t know where to start.” Neither did I. I still don’t have it all figured out.
But here’s the truth: clarity comes through action, not waiting. You will never feel fully ready. Start anyway. You will make mistakes. Take losses. Change directions. But you’ll also grow in ways you never expected.
Don’t wait for the world to make space for you — create your own little corner, however imperfect.
Every Batua bag is carefully checked, lovingly packed by hand, and sent off with a hand written note— because you deserve more than just a product, you deserve a little joy 💌✨.
A Note to Every Woman Reading This
If you’ve ever felt stuck between doing what’s expected and doing what’s calling you — I see you.
You might be juggling a demanding job, a household, and a silent dream you only talk about in whispers. But here’s the thing: you’re allowed to pursue something for yourself. Even if it’s messy. Even if no one fully understands it yet.
Batua isn’t perfect. It’s not a massive business. But it’s mine. And that makes it powerful.
So, whether your dream is to start a travel blog, become a full-time artist, or launch your own online store — start small. Start scared. But just start.
Because sometimes, what looks like a “bad idea” from the outside, turns out to be the best thing you could’ve ever done for yourself.

Until Next Time
Thank you for reading this piece of my heart. I’m not here to pretend I have it all figured out. But I’m here to show up — and I hope this post gave you permission to do the same.
Love,
Sakshi
